The weather forecasts for this week announce the arrival of strong storms and an expected thermal relief. This change comes from the hand of a DANA (Isolated High Level Depression) that will pass over the peninsula and will affect, among other territories, the province of Castellón.
The Trough: The prelude to the storm
A trough, an area of low atmospheric pressure, has begun its advance from the Atlantic towards the Iberian Peninsula. This weather system is the precursor of the changes we are about to experience. Precipitation is already being recorded in northern Spain, but this is only the beginning.
What can we expect in the coming hours?
Showers and thunderstorms in high areas in the centre and north of the peninsula. Possibility of hail in Navarra, La Rioja, Soria, Aragon, inland Catalonia and Castellón. Yellow and orange warnings activated in these regions, indicating the potential severity of storms.
The DANA: The main course
As the trough advances towards the northeast of the peninsular on Wednesday, it is expected that a DANA will "hang off" from it. This is a particularly interesting and potentially dangerous weather phenomenon.
Impact of the DANA:
- Wednesday: It will mainly affect the east of the peninsula, including Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia and possibly Murcia.
- Thursday: It will move towards the Mediterranean, focusing on the Balearic Islands with heavy rain and strong thunderstorms.
- Friday-Saturday: The DANA is expected to move away to the east, allowing stability to gradually return.
Heavy Precipitation and Severe Event Risk
The combination of the trough and the DANA promises to create conditions for significant precipitation:
More than 50 mm is forecast in northern Catalonia and Aragon, more than 30 mm in inland Catalonia, Castellon and Valencia. Although the Balearic Islands could receive the most rain, with Menorca exceeding 50 mm, the north of Mallorca more than 40 mm, and Ibiza more than 30 mm.
In addition to heavy rain, there is a high risk of severe thunderstorms, large hail and high wind gusts.
Thermal Relief: A respite from the intense heat
One of the most welcome aspects of this DANA is the thermal relief it will bring with temperature drops of between 10°C and 12°C in several regions. Wednesday will probably be the coolest day, with few areas exceeding 35°C. In addition, some areas in the northern half could even fall below 30°C.
