The Unió Llauradora has forecast a 3% drop in citrus production in the Valencian Community for the 2025-2026 season, estimating a total volume of 2.68 million tonnes, compared to 2.76 million the previous year. In Castellón, the situation is even more critical: an average reduction of 11% is expected, especially for clemenules, the leading variety, which will lose 19% of its provincial production, falling to around 226,000 tonnes compared to 273,000 tonnes previously.
This decline is due to a combination of factors such as the sustained rise in temperatures since June, episodes of hail, the ageing of the trees and the growing impact of pests such as the Schirtothrips aurantii, whiteflies, South African mealybugs, and red spider mites. Given this situation, the sector is calling for public aid to be made available for the renovation of farms, the strengthening of phytosanitary controls, and measures to combat competition from third countries, such as mandatory cold treatment of imports.
