The Citrus Growers' Association of South Africa (CGA) and the Fresh Produce Exporters' Forum (FPEF) have announced the end of South African orange exports to the European Union in 2025. The last day of inspection for Valencia oranges destined for the European market will be September 20, due to the presence of black spot on citrus fruits from certain producing regions.
This closure marks the end of a campaign in which South Africa has maintained a “spirit of continued and growing cooperation” with Europe, according to both organizations. The decision is based on phytosanitary reasons, in line with the protocols established to protect European citrus production.
For the citrus sector in the Valencian Community, this announcement is something to bear in mind, as the reduction in international supply may open up new commercial opportunities in European markets, especially for producers in Castellón, Valencia, and Alicante.
