Modern agriculture faces many challenges, including the proper management of plant protection products that can no longer be used. To provide a solution to this problem, the Generalitat Valenciana has launched a pilot project that promises to revolutionise the way farmers handle these potentially hazardous products and promote responsible pesticide management.
A step forward in environmental protection
The Valencia Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Livestock and Fisheries has announced a pioneering initiative that will allow farmers to dispose of banned, expired or out-of-use plant protection products free of charge and safely. This project, with an investment of 130,000 euros by 2024, is being carried out in collaboration with the Federation of Agri-food Cooperatives of the Valencia Region.
Ambitious goals and tangible benefits
The programme aims to remove more than 35,000 kilograms of plant protection substances that can no longer be used on farms. The products to be withdrawn include insecticides, fungicides, acaricides and herbicides.
These products, whose application is currently banned or which have expired, represent a potential risk to the environment if not properly managed.
An efficient and accessible collection system
To facilitate farmers' participation, more than 100 collection points have been set up in cooperative organisations throughout the region. This system offers several advantages:
- Proximity: Farmers can deliver products to locations close to their farms.
- Free of charge: The service is free of charge for farmers.
- Agility: A simple and fast process for delivery has been designed.
- Safety: The collection points function as temporary stockpiles prior to transfer to authorised waste managers.
Environmental impact and compliance
This initiative not only benefits farmers, but also has a significant positive impact on the environment:
- It prevents the uncontrolled release of hazardous substances.
- Reduces the risk of soil and groundwater contamination.
- Ensures that products are treated in accordance with the legislation in force.
A role model
The pilot project in the Generalitat Valenciana could serve as a model for other agricultural regions in Spain and Europe. By providing a practical and accessible solution to a common problem, the initiative demonstrates how collaboration between government and agricultural organisations can generate positive results for both farmers and the environment.
