plásticos reflectantes contra las plagas

A new strategy against exotic pests: Reflective plastics.

The Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research (IVIA) is testing an innovative solution to protect Burriana's citrus fruit: metallised plastic covers. These reflective plastics, installed in collaboration with the company S.A.T. La Plana, aim to control pests such as the dreaded Scirtothrips aurantii, known as the South African citrus thrips. This insect causes severe damage to leaves, shoots and fruit, and represents a serious threat to the profitability of Valencian crops.

More than a physical barrier: a multifunctional solution

These reflective sheets not only block the access of soil-dwelling pests, but also visually disorientate insects during their flight, making it difficult for them to locate plants. In addition to their protective effect, these covers improve the microclimate of the crop, helping to retain moisture, raise soil temperature and accelerate tree growth. This dual functionality could make a significant difference in the sustainable management of citrus crops.

Ongoing field trials and long-term projections

The trials are being carried out in two fields in Burriana at different stages of development. In one, with young plants, they are studying how the covers affect initial growth; in the other, already in production, they are analysing the impact on the quality and ripening of the fruit. The researchers are confident that this technique, already effective against other pests, could also contribute to the control of HLB vectors, one of the most dangerous diseases for citrus. The Generalitat supports this research with investments that reinforce plant health and innovation in the field.
