The Virgen de la Naranja 2025 Day and the current situation of the citrus fruit sector in the Comunitat Valenciana

Every second Monday in May, the city of Castellón celebrates the festivity of the Virgen de la Naranja, a deep-rooted tradition that highlights the region's agricultural legacy, especially the cultivation of orange trees, a pillar of its cultural and economic identity. This festivity, which is held in the Basilica of Santa María del Lledó, brings together authorities, representatives of the agricultural sector and citizens in an event that extols the relevance of the local citrus sector.

Current situation of the citrus sector in the Valencia Region

Taking advantage of this festivity, an assessment was made of the current situation of the citrus sector in the province and in the Valencia Region and these were the three points that were highlighted.

Declining production

The citrus sector in the Valencia Region faces various challenges. According to recent data, the citrus crop for the 2024/2025 season has been very low due to adverse weather conditions. Estimates indicate that production will be 14.4% lower than the average of the last five seasons and 21.1% lower than the average of the last ten seasons.

International competition

Another major challenge is the competition from citrus coming from countries such as Egypt, whose massive production has impacted local sales. Although this season has shown signs of recovery thanks to the reduction in Egyptian production, pressure from imports continues to be a constant challenge for Valencian growers.

Lack of skilled labour

In addition, local producers also face problems related to the lack of skilled labour for orange picking, a factor that has further complicated the management of the current season.

Cocalni's commitment to the citrus sector

As a citrus cooperative, in Cocalni we reaffirm our commitment to the tradition and future of the sector. Furthermore, we are working to face the current challenges, adopting sustainable practices, innovating in our processes and supporting our farmers to ensure the continuity and prosperity of orange growing in our region.
