The Valencian Institute of Agrarian Research (IVIA) has presented an innovative strategy for the control of the Scirtothrips aurantiian invasive pest that threatens citrus production in the Valencian Community. The initiative, promoted by the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Livestock and Fisheries, seeks to offer effective solutions at all stages of citrus growth.
A plan based on chemical research and control
During the day New Thrips in Citrusheld at the IVIA headquarters, plant health experts presented the results of field trials carried out between September and December 2024. Based on these studies, a control strategy has been structured in two key phases:
- Sprouting period: Sampling methods are implemented to assess for the presence of the Scirtothrips and determine the need for chemical intervention.
- Flowering stage: Specific treatments are applied based on the data collected in the previous phase, thus optimising the effectiveness of control.
Commitment to sustainability
The regional secretary for Agriculture, Vicente Tejedo, stressed the importance of combining biological control strategies with the responsible use of chemical treatments. While pesticide reduction is encouraged, in some cases chemical control is necessary to avoid crop losses.
In addition, the IVIA will continue with trials in selected plots in different areas of the Valencian Community to assess the evolution of the pest and provide farmers with updated information.
A call to action
Since November 2024, the Regional Ministry of Agriculture has repeatedly requested a bilateral meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to address pest control, without having received a response to date.
This joint work between agricultural research and field application is key to preserving the productivity and sustainability of the Valencian citrus sector.
