The first data from the Unió Llauradora for the 2024/2025 citrus season indicate a slight increase of 3% in production in the Valencia Region, reaching 2.88 million tonnes. However, this will be the third lowest crop of the century mainly due to persistent drought and adverse weather conditions.
Although production is slightly increasing, it is still 10% lower compared to the average of the last 25 years. Climatic factors, ageing trees, abandonment of farmland and pests have contributed to this situation.
LA UNIÓ hopes that this reduction in production will allow an orderly supply to the markets, maintaining stable and higher prices than in previous seasons.
Citrus imports have increased by 6.3% in the first four months of 2024, mainly from Egypt, Turkey and Morocco. LA UNIÓ is calling for the strengthening of import protocols and the elimination of bonuses at ports for imported citrus fruits.
Carles Peris, secretary general of LA UNIÓ, stresses the importance of ensuring fair and stable prices for producers in the face of this new harvest affected by various circumstances.
