Summer is one of the most demanding seasons for orange and mandarin crops. High temperatures, wind and lack of rainfall can compromise the health of trees if irrigation is not managed correctly. At Cocalni, a citrus cooperative in Les Alqueries, we know that good irrigation in summer makes the difference between a vulnerable harvest and quality fruit.
Water: a vital (and limited) resource
During the hottest months, citrus trees increase their water demand. Water not only hydrates the tree, it also regulates its temperature, enables photosynthesis and promotes fruit growth. However, water is an increasingly scarce resource, and its use must be efficient.
How irrigation works in Cocalni
Our partners use localised irrigation systems (drip irrigation) that make the most of every drop. This type of irrigation minimises evaporation, delivers water directly to the roots, reduces the risk of disease and improves fruit development.
In addition, the irrigation schedule is carefully planned according to soil type, tree variety, and weather conditions.
Watering in summer: frequency and key moments
In June, July and August, watering should be more frequent, but without excess. Ideally, water in the early morning or late afternoon, maintain moisture without waterlogging and watch for signs of water stress such as fallen leaves or dry fruit.
Balanced irrigation helps the fruit to grow healthily, with good size and excellent flavour.
Cooperation, knowledge and commitment
At Cocalni, we don't just share water, we also share knowledge. We advise our farmers on improving irrigation techniques, incorporate technology, and promote responsible water use. Because caring for our fields also means caring for the future.
