Discovering the orogrande

In the blog of Cocalni, we love to share information about the different citrus varieties we work with. From vibrant oranges to exquisite clementines, each fruit has a history and unique characteristics that make it special. On this occasion, we want to talk about the orogrande clementine, a variety that has conquered both growers and consumers for its quality and flavour.

Orogrande: an exceptional variety

Since its discovery in Murcia in 1978, the orogrande has gained a prominent place among the clementines. This selection of the Clemenules retains many similarities to its original variety, but has unique characteristics that make it particularly attractive.

Outstanding features of the orogrande

  • A robust and productive tree: Orogrande is vigorous, with a fast initial growth and an early entry into production. It has a staggered flowering and a pollen with high germination power.
  • High quality fruit: The size is similar or slightly larger than the Clemenules, with a smooth skin and fewer essential oil glands, which gives it a balanced and juicy flavour.
  • Rich in juice and seedless: With a juice content between 47% and 55%, this clementine is perfect for fresh consumption or juicing. Although in cases of cross-pollination, seeds may be found, this is unusual.

Agronomic advantages

Orangutan offers benefits both in terms of cultivation and profitability:

  • Its staggered flowering allows better management of production times.
  • It has a high fruiting capacity, ideal for abundant harvests.
  • Its harvesting period, from November to January, favours its marketing during the high season.

However, it is important to pay attention to their sensitivity to scarfing and "pixat", in order to maintain the quality of the fruit.

The orogrande is an excellent choice in the world of clementines. Its flavour, quality and adaptability make it an interesting alternative for those looking for first class fruit.
