Origin and expansion of the Nadorcott mandarin
The Nadorcott mandarin, also known as AfourerIt originated in Morocco, where it was developed from a natural selection of the Murcott variety. Thanks to its excellent organoleptic qualities and its ability to adapt well to different citrus-growing areas, its cultivation has spread rapidly throughout Mediterranean countries, including Spain. In the Valencian Community, Nadorcott has established itself as a strategic variety due to its ability to offer high-quality fruit late in the mandarin season.
Main characteristics of the fruit
One of the hallmarks of the Nadorcott mandarin is its intense, balanced flavour, with a high sugar content and moderate acidity that make it particularly popular with consumers. It is medium-sized, slightly flattened in shape and has a thin, deep orange skin that is easy to peel when it reaches optimum ripeness. Its flesh is juicy and aromatic, with well-defined segments. Although it may contain seeds if cross-pollination occurs, proper agricultural management ensures fruit of excellent commercial quality.
Harvest calendar and market value
Nadorcott is a late harvest variety, normally between January and March, which allows the citrus season to be extended and mandarins to be offered when other varieties have already finished. This characteristic makes it a very attractive option for both farmers and cooperatives, as it helps to ensure a continuous supply of citrus fruits to the markets. Its good post-harvest preservation and attractive appearance mean that the Nadorcott mandarin is in high demand, establishing itself as one of the premium varieties in the mandarin segment.
